Case Study - Art Design
Company: Carlo Borer
Industry: Art Creation
Location: Switzerland
Company Background:
Freelance Artist, Carlo Borer creates three-dimensional sculptures and art objects. His large chrome steel creations can be seen throughout Europe and the USA where some of his work found its way into Hollywood film productions. This Swiss designer creates 3D models in a digital environment using CAD and virtual reality. To manufacture his sophisticated sculptures, he also utilizes high-tech tools such as lasers.
The Challenge:
In 1998, Carlo was looking for a CAD system that was easy to understand with good visual appearance and feedback. At that time, CAD was not very intuitive and seemed more appropriate for engineers but not for artists or artistic designers.
IronCAD The Productivity Solution:
Then Carlo discovered IronCAD, a product that allowed him to work directly in 3D. He found that he could simply drag basic shapes into his 3D scene and start to modify them to meet his needs. Today, he loves working in this way. Carlo designs his creations using the patented IronCAD Triball. This powerful software tool offers a huge range of possibilities for the user. One can easily handle geometry positions; arrange, rearrange, copy, link, and much more. Carlo finds that the possibilities offered by IronCAD are unique in the CAD world.
Complete freedom in design, along with a scene browser, lets Carlo manage all shapes, parts, assemblies and dive into each whenever needed. Also the scene browser lets him keep a proper structure for the parts in a scene. In the design process the visual feedback for assemblies, parts, shapes, surfaces, edges, and points is very helpful.
Carlo enjoys working with IRONCAD because the software is easy to understand, it offers him design freedom while remaining logical and intuitive. Carlo employs several intuitive ways to change IronCAD shapes such as: sizebox or shape handles for changing designs directly in 3D or going back to the cross section for more complex changes. He notes that his workflow is improved with the Hide, Suppress and the new Ghost options. And when it comes time to annotate or communicate his ideas, IRONCAD’s 2D and 3D SmartDimensions allows easy arrangement or locking of dimensions between parts or shapes as well as communication of key measurements in the 2D drawing.
Carlos goes on to describe one of his favorite IRONCAD features, “I can go back in the very first shape (to its cross section or to the shape handle), do the changes that are needed and everything will work correctly, even in a negative Boolean operation due to IRONCAD’s smart update technology! I can also manually rearrange part feature hierarchy if needed so that shapes can be correctly affected by shelling or Boolean operations”.
Artists need to be able to model and create in several different methods since there are always several ways to do a job. They especially like to modify their shapes for aesthetic or ergonomic reasons. IRONCAD makes it so easy to accomplish these goals with the TriBall, sizebox and shape handles, SmartDimensions and the many other technologies available in IRONCAD.

Summary:
- Freedom to design any artistic shape
- Flexible paradigm allows unrestricted design modifications
- Effectively share ideas with built-in collaboration tools
- Automatic update of all related documentation
“It’s easy to create a parts, objects and drawings plus the wide range of import/export formats helps me communicate with the outside world. To connect with my clients, I produce 3D PDF documents of my objects and drawings.
Because working with the software is like playing piano, I develop most of my designs directly in IRONCAD. This freedom has given me the ability to create complex new possibilities and products. IRONCAD has opened new doors to develop extraordinary artwork, design and architecture. Even after 16 years of using IRONCAD, I am still surprised at its amazing creative power!
IronCAD 2014 is the best CAD software ever” – Carlo Borer, Artist.
